Last transfers before a president change, teaching English, and a baptism!

Glynis here: We were not able to talk to Jacob this week. As many of you know, Peru experienced an 8.0 earthquake. It's center was in the heart of Jacob's mission. Because it was so deep in the earth, it wasn't as destructive as it could have been, but it did some definite damage. For most of Sunday, we waited on pins and needles to hear the news from the mission. Early in the afternoon, we received a letter from our missionary (Personal Secretary to the President), letting us know that all is ok. It was wonderful to be witness to Jacob doing his job, and reaching out to all the parents who were waiting for news about their missionaries. We are looking forward to hearing from Jacob this week to find out how this earthquake has impacted the mission.

Hey everyone,

This week was really interesting. The new mission president is coming next transfer, and it´s been absolutely crazy here trying to get everything ready. For example, there are some people who are here repainting the office and doing all sorts of stuff with the computers, and we aren´t allowed to leave the office until they leave, so we have sort of been trapped here for a good while. It´s been productive though.

This Monday is transfers, and as the Personal Secretary, there is so much stuff I have to do for them. I guess it was good to have some extra time in the office to do that, but I've been going a little crazy!

We did have time to go out though. We teach an English class every Monday, and last Monday, we were teaching about the names of the months. We had some interested people show up. It turns out they were friends of some members and they invited us to come visit them. One of them is named Liz and she is getting so excited about the church. For her first lesson, Elder Roper and I decided it would be good to show the movie "The Restoration." During the movie, she had a lot of good questions, and right before Joseph Smith had the first vision, she told us, "I've always wondered why there are so many churches if there´s only one God." Then when Joseph Smith had the vision, we all felt the spirit so strong. She said she believes it; that it´s true. Since Monday, we've taught her 2 more times, and she is super excited. We are going to give her a baptismal date this next week, so that´s going to be awesome!

Speaking of baptisms, tonight is Braulio´s baptism! He was the reference from Octavio, my convert in Mi Peru. This morning, (Saturday) Elder Roper and I went to the font to clean it out. It turns out the drain is broken, and we couldn't drain it. We decided to just turn on the water and try our best to clean the gross water with a broom. I´ll include a picture of me this morning doing that.

It was Elder Roper's birthday this week. The other office missionaries and I decided to buy him a cake to celebrate. Well, when the Elder who was holding it tried to put it on my desk, it dropped and fell all over my desk. Pretty funny! Oh well, what are you going to do?

That´s pretty much what´s been going on, Life is good. I love the work and this gospel. I hope you are all doing well, God loves you, as do I!

Hasta luego!

Elder Neves
