Almost a Baptism

P-day adventures, working in a trio, visit from the Prophet, and news about the baptism.

Glynis here: This week was truly amazing for me, as a mom of a missionary! I did not have to work on Monday, so I was able to "chat" with Jacob via email for a good 30 minutes, back and forth! It was wonderful to be able to "speak" with him, and know, for sure, that he is doing ok, and is happy! However, he wasn't able to include any pictures with this post, so that put a damper on things. Oh well, hopefully he'll be able to send a whole bunch next week. Enjoy this week's letter!
Well, this week was kind of all over the place! Monday, our P-day, we went to another zoo-like place, and it was pretty awesome! We ate lunch on this little pier overlooking a river, and there were so many turtles beneath us! We also saw some crocodiles and capibarra. I think I finally realized what a weird place I am living in. As we were just walking along, I casually picked a star fruit from a tree and ate it like it was a normal thing to do! Things are very different here, but I love it!
This past week we also got the news that we are going to be in a trio for the last 2 weeks of this transfer. One of our elders, Elder Macz, went to the office to become a secretary for the President, so Elder Perez (his previous companion), Elder Sindayen and I are are in a trio. We've already finished one week, so we have one week left before the end of this transfer. It's been sort of difficult to manage 2 areas at the same time, because we have to split our day in half. We work in our area for half of the day, and his area for the other half. Because of that, we haven't had very much success. Oh well, it's ok. We can't leave an Elder companionless!
Something I've come to realize is that when we are teaching, we can't be so focused on how we are going to respond to our investigators questions. But rather, if we focus on what they are saying, we will realize what they need and our mouths will be filled with the words at the exact time that they need it. Basically, if we listen, they will tell us what they need through the Spirit. So now I am incorporating that more and more into my style of teaching, and it seems to be working. We've had more spiritual lessons, focused on the needs of the investigators at the time they need them.
Saturday was such a full day! In the morning, we went down to the river bank to a house in Elder Perez's area. We did some service cutting a lady's lawn with our machetes. That was so fun! But, in the heat here is was also horrible! However, a few Inca Kolas later and we were able to get it mostly done.
Also on Saturday, President Russell M. Nelson was in Lima, in the MTC, talking to the missionaries and there was a nationwide broadcast to all the missionaries! He didn't speak Spanish, but there was a translator and they took turns speaking. It was weird hearing it in both languages at the same time, but it was also so cool! He spoke about the importance of the Book of Mormon in the conversion process and that was a powerful talk! It truly is essential. Later that afternoon, he talked to the whole country, well, to all the members in Peru. This time he just spoke in Spanish normally, without a translator. So now, I actually have no clue if he can or can't speak Spanish, but it was still such a powerful talk. He spoke about the importance of the Sabbath day, and the importance of family. I loved it!
So, if you all remember, this Saturday was supposed to be the baptism of familia Cuelo. We were planning on doing it at the Stake Center, so we went to get the font ready. The water in the font was the grossest water I have ever seen in my life! No joke! It was almost black. We started draining it, and then went to our chapel, to initiate a backup plan, but we found out that the water in our chapel was gone! There was not water at all! The toilets didn't flush, and we couldn't fill the font. So that sucked! We had to postpone the baptism until we get new water next week. Keep your fingers crossed that we will have water, and therefore, a baptism this weekend! Thanks!
That's about it for this week.
Love you all,
Elder Neves
